Everything You Need to Know about Morse NFT and the DN404 Implementation

--. –- -–- .-. ... .

Say hello to Morse, the cutest puppy in the crypto world living in the Mitosis Lab 404.

Morse communicates with humans using Morse code. Therefore, I will be your translator throughout this in-depth article.

We will delve into:

  • Morse's origins
  • Incubating your Morse NFT
  • The technology behind it (comprehensive DN404 analysis)
  • Using its technology to your advantage (strategic rerolling guide)
  • Checking Morse's rarity
  • Current benefits
  • Future developments

Morse's origins

Our beloved Morse was born in the Mitosis Lab 404, specifically via OAT rewards and Decoder parts collected throughout a 10-week research campaign held on Mitosis Galxe Space and Mitosis Discord.

The collected weekly rewards granted participants $MORSE DN404 Samples, which were employed to mint their own Morse NFT(s).

Morse DN404 gene - the technology behind it

DN-404 is a hybrid token implementation that merges and is fully compliant with ERC-20 (fungible tokens, like cryptocurrencies) and ERC-721 (non-fungible tokens, or NFTs) specifications.

For convention, the ERC-20 contract is designated as the base contract, and the ERC-721 contract is designated as the mirror contract.[1]

The objective was to introduce native fractionalization to NFT projects, making them compatible with both NFT marketplaces and DEXs.

Beyond enhancing NFT projects' liquidity, this feature turned out to be beneficial from a community-incentives perspective, endowing organizations (like Mitosis) with the prerogative to arrange different events with a versatile token allotment due to the non-existing constraints of traditional NFTs; hence creating a continuous reward system.

From @optimizoor[2], the main author behind DN404:

The best feature of DN404 is you don’t need to make a minting frontend. Web development is hard.

From @0xCygaar[3], one of the authors of DN404:

What does DN404 ultimately achieve?
Our end goal was to create a token standard that could act as an NFT with native fractionalization built in. This was a unique unlock of ERC404 that allowed users to trade portions of NFTs without any middle man.

What does it mean in practice?

1 $MORSE token = 1 Morse NFT

Whenever your $MORSE balance is equal to (or greater than) the base unit(s) (e.g. 1, 2, 3, etc.), a new Morse NFT gets minted automatically.

Illustration of how the $MORSE balance affects the corresponding Morse NFT.

i.e.

acquire 1 $MORSE sample (base unit amount of tokens) ➞ you will get a newly minted Morse NFT (mirror token)

purchase 1 Morse NFT ➞ you will get 1 $MORSE token

and vice versa:

sell the token (even a fraction of it, which makes the balance go below the unit) ➞ your Morse disappears (burn the NFT)

sell the NFT ➞ lose 1 $MORSE

Take care of your pup because if you burn the NFT, it returns to the incubation queue, and it will not be easy to get it back! (since it is going to take a while to mint the same token ID #, which follows a linear sequence [1..n])

Incubating Your Morse NFT

Although the initial campaign has long ended, it is not too late to become a proud Morse Trainer.

In the Mitosis Lab 404, a new Morse is incubated per every 1 DN404 $MORSE sample, and there is a maximum total supply of 10,000 $MORSE on the Ethereum (ETH) mainnet.

Only a small portion of $MORSE was distributed via the opening campaign, while the rest remained available to be allocated to future campaigns, promotions, and various forms of community contributions. The total circulating supply at the time of writing this article is 3,150.96 $MORSE (of which 2,714 are Morse NFTs), while the rest is yet to be airdropped.

The easiest and fastest way to get a Morse is to either buy 1 $MORSE on Uniswap (or through any aggregator you desire) or choose your Morse NFT directly via Opensea.

Otherwise, if you wish to get your $MORSE tokens through contributions to the Mitosis Ecosystem, I invite you to join the Mitosis Discord for more information.

Those options are not mutually exclusive. You can buy your NFT now and still participate in community events to expand your collection.

Checking Morse NFT Rarity

Once it is yours, you can check your Morse NFT rarity either by looking at the metadata on Opensea or by pasting the token #ID in this tool made by @MurinXDA[4].

There are five different rarity levels (in order from most to least rare):

  1. Mythical Breed
  2. Legendary Hound
  3. Epic Canine
  4. Rare Pooch
  5. Lil Pup

Take advantage of the DN404 implementation - rerolling guide

As we have seen in the previous paragraphs, when your $MORSE balance falls below an integer the most recently acquired Morse NFT disappears.

This mechanism enables NFT "rerolling" - engineering the balance so as to burn the NFT and mint a new one by transferring fractional amounts of $MORSE.

In order to do this, you need:

  • two Ethereum wallets
  • sufficient gas for on-chain transactions (variable depending on gwei conditions)

Now, all you need to do is send a fraction of $MORSE to your second wallet (e.g. if you have 1 $MORSE, send 0.1 to the second wallet to make sure that the balance is <1) so that the current NFT gets burned, and send the tokens back to the main wallet to mint a new NFT.

⚠️ Be extremely careful when performing rerolls because if you burn the NFT, it will be hard to get it back. Always double-check the corresponding token ID # that you are transferring.

You can employ this strategy as many times as you wish. Whether you are seeking a rarer or more aesthetically pleasing Morse reflecting your style, rerolling is for you.

You can utilize Murin’s “Reroll Checker” tool to preview what the subsequent mint available is going to be, along with other pieces of information like how many times you should reroll to get the next Mythical Breed pup, Legendary Hound, Top 500 by attributes, etc. This tool filters out Morse NFTs that have already been minted.

You can also go on Etherscan to track the latest minted Morse in real time. You can identify it by looking at the most recent row where the transaction goes From the Null address and reading the corresponding Item # in the last column.

Please note:

The minting queue follows a sequential order that starts from 1 and goes up to 10,000. When the cycle reaches the upper limit, it will start over from 1.

However, you will not necessarily find the exact token ID # you would expect after rerolling because the NFT may have already been minted. In this case, the contract will automatically skip to the next vacant token ID #.

Thus, I encourage you to check beforehand the Morse you want by pasting its token ID # on the OKX NFT marketplace.

Morse is a highly intelligent breed that can communicate with humans using the Morse code.

If the search output is “No items found” your desired Morse is still in the incubation queue.

As mentioned above, Murin’s toolkit automatically checks for already minted Morses; you will not have to worry about this. On the other hand, if you research your potential Morse on the blockchain by yourself, keep this information in mind to avoid chasing minted ones.

Morse NFT Benefits

Mitosis Expedition

The maximal benefit for those who hold 1 $MORSE token is that it grants a 1.3x MITO Point Boost in Mitosis Expedition.

By accruing MITO points, Mitosis Expedition participants become eligible for the $MITO governance token airdrop at launch.

Dedicated community

Upon minting (after verifying your wallet on Mitosis Discord), you will get access to a private channel called Morse Town.

The Morse Town channel is the agora where Morse Trainers reunite to share their expertise, participate in dedicated contests, showcase their new pups, and receive exclusive insights on future developments.

Collaborations with other projects

Morse Trainers enjoy privileged access to collaborations with other projects and communities in the cryptocurrency space.

In early 2025, Morse NFT holders received 300 whitelist spots for Tuzi NFT[5] and 9 lucky ones won 1 Raccoons Ticket NFT each.[6]

Future benefits

I have gathered a few excerpts from Luke’s (Mitosis co-founder) letters, hinting at upcoming plans for Morse holders.

June 14, 2024 - “Why I Always Emphasize 'Community First’”

We are designing our ecosystem so that $MORSE holders will continue to benefit from Mitosis Expedition, Mitosis Public Testnet, and Mitosis Mainnet. (Stay tuned!)

Editor’s note: while the Mitosis Expedition is ongoing and Mitosis Mainnet is yet to be live, Mitosis Public Testnet (also known as Game of Mito testnet) has concluded. Morse Community NFT Holders were eligible for Superpass codes depending on the rarity (and quantity) and a “Morse Holder” XP Boost.

July 19, 2024

I've kept my promises. In our community, everyone—artists, community participants, developers, and senseis—will be rewarded. And $MORSE is just the start. Our team hasn't gained any economic benefits from $MORSE. Instead, we are planning even more merchandise utilizing the $MORSE IP! Please stay tuned. Haha.

January 30, 2025 - “Morse”

Originally known as DN404, Morse was a community NFT for early supporters. Over time, it gained traction and now has 1,000+ ETH in trading volume. We’re both thankful and amazed by its growth!
We plan to make Morse holders feel even more exclusive—possibly with a dedicated chat and a community vote on reducing supply. This could involve burning some of both team and community allocations. Let’s decide together!
We’re also thinking about an event rewarding those who’ve held Morse the longest, so stay tuned.

December 23, 2024 - "@Morse_404 is the Mitosis cult."[7]

Every holder comes from different chains and backgrounds, uniting under one culture that embraces Mitosis and beyond.
Decentralized at heart, governance belongs to Morse holders—we’re building a place where the community leads.
[…] Onward we go, carrying this culture forward and shaping Morse’s future together—stay tuned for what’s next.

Final thoughts

The DN404 implementation leverages its native fractionalization to enhance liquidity, personalization (through rerolling), and flexibility (e.g. by providing an efficient way for projects to reward community contributions).

Morse, powered by this dynamic implementation, transcends typical NFT collections. The ability to reroll and strategize rarity selection adds a gamified layer to the ownership experience, making it a compelling asset for both traders and NFT enthusiasts alike.

As Morse deepens its integration within the Mitosis ecosystem, it serves as a blueprint for future developments in fractional ownership and community-driven NFT projects.

Looking ahead, one might wonder how fractional ownership could reshape the NFT collections landscape as a whole and what other innovations could emerge from it.

How do you think it could evolve beyond its current structure to unlock even more utility?
